RCC: Building CSR Momentum

The CSR agenda will continue to evolve. Customers expect retailers to build on recent successes. In response, Retail Council of Canada has helped retailers build momentum for sustainable business practices in many ways over the past year.

For example, RCC members, through their Environment Committee, are involved in more than 30 regulated product stewardship programs across the country, and an additional 10 voluntary programs. For example, for the new Saskatchewan Waste Electronic Equipment Program (SWEEP), RCC successfully advocated for the flexibility to allow retailers to display the environmental handling fee visibly as a separate line item on the sales receipt, which helps to ensure that this new program will be viable for retailers.

In Ontario, RCC partnered with the Conservation Council of Ontario to launch the "Doors Closed" campaign, an initiative that encouraged retailers to keep their doors closed during hot summer days to encourage energy conservation. As well, the Canadian Retailers Advancing Responsible Trade (CRART), an advisory council to RCC's Board of Directors, promotes the adoption of responsible trade practices by Canadian retailers.

"I think one change I've seen is consumers are becoming smarter. They want to know where you buy your product, who was involved, was it made in a sweatshop... Customers are becoming more aware. We've changed our business to reflect that."

"The Home Depot has a long history of corporate citizenship, be it encouraging our customers to use environmentally friendly products or actively supporting our associates to volunteer in their communities. Our industry has the collective power to reach every citizen in the country several times a day — these citizens, our customers, can benefit from and be inspired by our industry's good works and we should take every opportunity to do so."
