RCC: Harnessing the Power of Information

Organized retail crime threatens all retailers. A survey of retailers commissioned by RCC in early 2007 found that 91% of respondents experienced internal and external theft in the past 12 months, 79% said they were defrauded during credit card and debit transactions, and 70% said their stores were burglarized.

Informing the public is one of the best ways to hurt organized criminals. A survey conducted by public opinion research company POLLARA in early 2007 found that Canadians were three times more likely to buy counterfeit goods than Americans. However, 86% of Canadians polled said they would stop buying counterfeit goods when they were informed that counterfeiting finances organized crime.

In light of these numbers, RCC began publishing the LP Newsletter, a quarterly publication that keeps retailers of all sizes and categories updated on the latest LP trends (members will receive a special LP Newsletter edition on retail organized crime in 2007). As well, RCC has developed a series of tip sheets designed to help independent retailers recognize that loss prevention is an issue that affects everyone.

"If we don't stay one step ahead of shoplifters, they will stay one step ahead of us. Today's varied shopping environments illustrate the need to use effective loss prevention strategies.
In order to protect customers, associates and assets, the main challenge is to stay ahead of tech-savvy criminals by using powerful tools and strategies to fight sophisticated technology-based crimes."

"Since joining RCC, I've learned a lot about security systems and theft deterrence. Loss prevention is not just a 'big guys' issue — we all have a role to play in finding solutions."
