Member Reminder: Small Appliance Recycling Program Launches October 1

September 29, 2011

The Canadian Electrical Stewardship Association (CESA), in consultation with the Retail Council of Canada (RCC) and the B.C. Ministry of Environment, has been working on the launch of a Small Appliance Recycling Program in British Columbia. The program will be the first of its kind in North America and will provide British Columbians with a responsible option to dispose small appliances that are currently land-filled each year.

The launch of the Small Appliance Recycling Program begins October 1 at both the retail and collection level, with more than 120 small appliances accepted for recycling. Collection will coincide with the introduction of fees for members on October 1, 2011.

Starting collection on the same date as the introduction of fees will help simplify the program launch for the general public and CESA members, depot operators, recyclers, producers and retailers.

British Columbians will be ready to drop off their appliances for recycling at the same time fees are introduced to CESA members – ensuring one consistent launch announcement and approach.

The Small Appliance Recycling Program has made significant progress in establishing over 100 recycling depots; preparing for program launch with recyclers, producers and retailers; distributing collection bins to depots; and producing public education materials.
