Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are statutory holidays in most provinces and territories. Boxing Day is not a statutory holiday in most provinces. The following is a brief overview of retail business regulations from across the country, as related to Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Since there are exceptions to Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day retail hours, based on jurisdiction and type of retail store, RCC members are encouraged to check with their local municipality or provincial/territorial government if they have specific questions. Please note: In provinces where there are no regulations related to Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day retail hours (see below), there may still be rules in a retailer’s shopping mall lease agreement pertaining to retail opening hours on that day.

CHRISTMAS DAY & NEW YEARS DAY

OPEN

In British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, retailers are allowed to open on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day as long as they pay their employees according to the law.

CLOSED

In New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are retail closing days for most retailers.

In Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, & Christmas Day and New Year’s Day are retail closing days for most retailers.

BOXING DAY

OPEN

In Quebec, retailers are allowed to open on Boxing Day after 1:00 P.M. for most retailers as long as they pay their employees according to the law. These restrictions do not apply to retailers located in “tourism zones”.

In British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon, retailers are allowed to open on Boxing Day as long as they pay their employees according to the law.

CLOSED
