Just a reminder, Ontario’s minimum wage is increasing to $11.00 from its current $10.25 level effective June 1, 2014. This change was announced in January of this year. The election call has no impact on this change.

However Bill 165, The Fair Minimum Wage Act, did not pass because of the call to have an election on June 12. As a result, anchoring future minimum wage adjustments to Ontario’s Consumer Price Index will not take place without legislation.

Retail Council of Canada will be making the case to the new government of the merits of re-introducing the Bill as it addressed RCC’s criteria for having a mechanism that was tied to the economic activity of the province and provided for changes that business could plan for annually.

Background:

RCC issued a member notice when the minimum wage announcement was made in January 2014.
