RCC speaks out on Copyright Reform
Retail Council of Canada is an advocate for fair copyright rules which mean:
- That creators of intellectual property should be paid for their work but not multiple times for the same transaction.
- That consumers be granted flexibility when they use copyrighted materials to allow for format, time and space shifting, which are not currently permitted by the law in Canada.
- That rules prohibiting circumvention of Technological Protection Measures (TPMs) used by copyright holders must not impede the consumer's ability to make backup copies, engage in format, time and space shifting, fair dealing and other legitimate activity, and to access public domain material.
- And rules prohibiting circumvention of TPMs for copyright infringing purposes should target persons who manufacture or traffic in services or devices whose sole purpose is to promote or permit circumvention for commercial gain on a commercial scale and to the material prejudice of rights holders.
