Manitoba’s Conservation Minister Gord Mackintosh has introduced Bill 55 - The Environment Amendment Act (Reducing Pesticide Exposure), which will significantly restrict the use and sale of prescribed synthetic chemical lawn pesticides.
Under the proposed legislation, only federally approved bio-pesticides or low-risk products would be allowed for use on:
- adjoining sidewalks and patios;
- school grounds, playgrounds and playing fields; and
- health-care institutions and child-care centre grounds.
The legislation, once passed, is expected to take effect in January 2015, providing retailers with time to make the appropriate changes needed in advance of the 2015 lawn care season. Manitoba Conservation has informed RCC that they will be consulting with RCC and retailers on the accompanying regulations and on how this legislation will be implemented.
