Retail Council of Canada's Comments on the Federal Government's Response to the Fourth Report of the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics
Statutory Review of the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)
January 15, 2008

Work Product Information

RCC was pleased to read about the Committee's focus on balance when addressing the issue of work product information.

British Columbia's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) strikes the right balance in dealing with work product information by providing greater certainty to private sector organizations, yet respecting the privacy of individuals. B.C.'s legislation clearly defines work product information and goes on to state that it "does not include personal information about an individual who did not prepare or collect the personal information."

This clarification is important to businesses and an amendment to PIPEDA along these lines would be supported by RCC and its members.
