Here’s a checklist to outline the days and times you can be open during the holidays.

Statutory Holidays

December 25 and January 1 are statutory holidays. Employees who must work are entitled to an indemnity, or to a compensatory holiday, three weeks before or after December 25th or January 1st. For instructions on how to calculate the indemnity, please visit Commission des normes du travail.

Please note that in the past numerous inspectors from the Minister of Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade (MEIE) have ensured that the rules governing holiday store hours were being followed, particularly on Boxing Day. Stores that fail to comply risk stiff fines. (Please see below for details.)

Retail Food Stores

Sales areas over 375 square metres (over 4,000 square feet).

  • December 24 – Stores can be open, but no more than four people on the sales floor from midnight to 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM to midnight.
  • December 25 – Stores must be closed.
  • December 26 (Boxing Day) – Stores can open at 1:00 PM.
  • December 31 – Stores can be open, but no more than four people on the sales floor from midnight to 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM to midnight.
  • January 1 – Stores must be closed.
  • January 2 – Normal store hours.

Sales areas of 375 square metres or less (4,000 square feet or less)

  • December 24 – Stores can be open, but no more than four people on the sales floor from midnight to 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM to midnight.
  • December 25 – Normal store hours.
  • December 26 (Boxing Day) – Normal store hours.
  • December 31 – Stores can be open, but no more than four people on the sales floor from midnight to 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM to midnight.
  • January 1 – Normal store hours.
  • January 2 – Normal store hours.

General Retail Stores

  • December 24 – Stores can be open until 5:00 PM.
  • December 25 – Stores must be closed.
  • December 26 (Boxing Day) – Stores can open at 1:00 PM.
  • December 31 – Stores can be open until 5:00 PM.
  • January 1 – Stores must be closed.
  • January 2 – Normal store hours.

Pharmacies

  • December 24 – Stores can be open, but no more than four people on the sales floor from midnight to 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM to midnight.
  • December 25 – Normal store hours.
  • December 26 (Boxing Day) – Stores can be open, but no more than four people on the sales floor from midnight to 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM to midnight.
  • December 31 – Stores can be open, but no more than four people on the sales floor from midnight to 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM to midnight.
  • January 1 – Normal store hours.
  • January 2 – Normal store hours.

Fines

Retail food stores

Minimum $1,500 for a first offence, $6,000 for a second offence and $9,000 for every subsequent offence.

Retail stores other than food stores

Minimum $1,500 for a first offence and minimum $3,000 for every subsequent offence.
