In response to the advocacy work done by Retail Council of Canada (RCC), the Ontario government announced today a Minimum Wage Advisory Panel. RCC has been pursuing an approach for setting minimum wage that creates certainty and allows retailers to plan for labour costs in a fair and economical manner going forward in Ontario. The Panel of five members includes two business representatives, one of which is RCC.
The purpose of this consultation is to seek views about Ontario’s minimum wage. Specifically, the Panel is seeking views on approaches for determining future adjustments to the minimum wage. The Panel will report back to the Minister of Labour in six months.
The Terms of Reference for the Panel can be found on the Ministry of Labour’s website.
The Panel will be conducting consultation based on a consultation paper in a number of as yet undetermined locations over the fall. Once the schedule has been finalized, retailers will be notified and encouraged to participate in those sessions.
RCC will be providing a response to the submission based on member feedback by the October 18, 2013 deadline.
