Retail Council of Canada Sets The Record Straight on Retail Pricing
TORONTO, November 3, 2011 - The Senate committee studying the Canada-U.S. price gap has heard many experts declare that international manufacturers and distributors charge Canadian retailers much more than retailers in the U.S., says Retail Council of Canada (RCC).
Senate of Canada Public Hearings on National Finance
November 2, 2011 - As you are aware, at the request of the Minister of Finance, the Senate has begun its study into the Canada-U.S. price gap for consumer products sold in Canada. The committee has been given a very broad mandate to look into this issue and has given itself until the end of June 2012 to report back on their findings. RCC encouraged government and Senate to postpone the original report date of December 2011. The committee has held four meetings to date, focused primarily on gathering information as to the possible scope and direction that their study will take.
Retail Council of Canada welcomes the re-introduction of the Copyright Modernization Act
TORONTO, Sep. 29, 2011 - Retail Council of Canada (RCC) welcomes the re-introduction of proposed amendments to Canada's Copyright Act in Bill C-11 and regards the bill as a positive step towards modernizing Canada's copyright laws. The draft legislation is an attempt to balance the interests of consumers who purchase copyrighted material and the creators of that material. Since the first version of this bill was introduced in June 2010, RCC has supported the Government's intent to update Canada’s copyright laws, but has stressed that more work needs to be done.

June 30, 2011 - Grocery members of the Retail Council of Canada (RCC) announced their support today for the introduction of a new test protocol to determine the impact of labels and adhesives on PET thermoform package recycling. Developed by the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers (APR), in conjunction with the National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR), this protocol was instigated by the grocery members of the RCC as part of their initiative to increase the availability of recyclable packaging in their stores.

Absorbing minimum wage increase will create significant challenges for retailers
Retail industry calls for further consultations following May 1 increase
Vancouver, March 17, 2011 - Following the B.C. governments announcement of a minimum wage increase, retailers would like to see a pragmatic, deliberate and measured approach to future minimum wage increases taking into account the strain that the proposed condensed timeline will put on the sector. A 25 percent minimum wage increase in the span of just over a year will create significant challenges for retailers and fails to recognize the concerns and previous recommendations of the retail community. Retail Council of Canada and Shelfspace, two of the largest retail sector associations in B.C. representing an industry that employs more than 300,000 workers in the province, is calling on the government for further and more expansive consultations following the first minimum wage increase in May 2011.
