Record Numbers Gather in Toronto to Examine the Extent and Impact of Retail Organized Crime in Canada and North America

Toronto, September 13, 2007 – With retail organized crime topping $40 billion annually in North America, retailers, loss prevention experts, Canadian and International law enforcement officials, and industry partners are gathering in record numbers at Retail Council of Canada's (RCC) annual Loss Prevention Conference, on Tuesday, September 18 in Toronto. Along with sessions on the impact of Retail Organized Crime (ROC), leading industry experts will share their research findings and best practices with delegates to assist in dealing with retail theft of all shapes and forms.

"Retail organized crime affects retailers of every type, every size, and in every part of North America to a tune of $40 billion annually, and in turn, adversely affects the economy and consumers. Therefore, loss prevention is a critical priority for all retailers, large and small," says Diane J. Brisebois, President and CEO of Retail Council of Canada. "This year's conference will focus on these increasingly sophisticated retail crimes and explore ways that retailers can partner with key stakeholders, including law enforcement, to mitigate these crimes and protect their assets."

Delegates will hear from experts from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), as well as from industry experts such as AON Consulting, Ipsos Reid, Ogilvy Renault LLP and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. In addition, Canadian and U.S. retail industry loss prevention professionals will share best practices and research to assist delegates in dealing with loss from theft and organized crime.

Retail Council of Canada and partners Ipsos Reid and RBC will present results from the first comprehensive loss prevention survey of small and independent retailers in Canada, as well as results from RCC and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP's 2007 Canadian Security Report.
