Labelling of hand sanitizers, disinfectants, soaps, & cleaning products

May 15, 2020

Retail Council of Canada received advance notice that the government of Canada has started to place restrictions on some of its temporary measures for sanitizers, household cleaners, and soaps, specifically on language labeling requirements, which were originally put in place to minimize supply disruptions.

Retailers must now, at the time of purchase, provide consumers a bilingual label. This can be done online (with the web address shared with the consumer) a sticker, or take-away pamphlets. These changes are now in effect for all new imports/products. Any previously authorized product has until June 8, 2020, to meet these requirements.

The remaining interim measures will be lifted when the regular supply stabilizes.

See Health Canada’s notice for further details.
