CDC US guidance on how to deal with ‘anti-mask’ customers: Limiting workplace violence associated with COVID-19

September 28, 2020

Retailers and their employees who are dealing with customers who refuse to wear masks can now refer to the new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guide. The CDC recommends:

  • Employees refrain from arguing with customers about coronavirus policies or trying to force consumers to cooperate if they make threatening statements or show indications they could become violent;
  • Incorporating curbside pickup and delivery services for goods, posting signs to inform patrons about coronavirus policies, and having a plan on how to respond to violence in the workplace;
  • Installing security measures like training workers in conflict resolution, putting in cameras, panic buttons, alarms, and having a designated safe space for employees to head toward if they feel unsafe in a situation.
