Mandatory mask mandate returns to Central Okanagan Regional District

In light of a growth of cases in the Central Okanagan Regional District, which includes Kelowna, West Kelowna, Lake Country, Peachland and the Westbank First Nation, an indoor public mask mandate will be reinstated, beginning Thursday, July 29, 2021 at 12:01 a.m. Masks will be required in all indoor public spaces, including retail, and recommended in outdoor areas where individuals aren’t able to physically distance themselves or are not yet fully vaccinated. The order applies to all individuals over 12 years of age. 

Travel to and from the Central Okanagan is also being discouraged unless those travelling are fully vaccinated.

Businesses linked to three or more COVID-19 cases, either among staff or customers, will be ordered closed, but may be allowed to remain open if all staff are vaccinated.

Other measures:

1. Enforcement of the renewed indoor mask mandate will be stepped up, particularly in downtown Kelowna;
2. People should hold organized events outdoors, rather than indoors. Fairs and festivals can continue, however, organizers must have a COVID-19 safety plan in place; 
3. Casinos and nightclubs can remain open, but masks must be worn;
4. Liquor service can remain as is, but patrons at bars and restaurants must wear masks unless seated; and
5. Gyms and sport facilities can remain open, but there must be increased cleaning, physical distancing, and masks must be worn.

The measures will remain in place for at least 14 days and until the region experiences lower cases and higher vaccination rates.
