Alberta updates Occupational Health and Safety Code

December 20, 2022

Following consultation over the past couple of years with stakeholders, including RCC members, Alberta’s government has announced changes to parts of the Occupational Health and Safety Code (OHS Code). The changes will take effect on March 31, 2023.

This is the first time since 2009 the OHS has been significantly updated and reflects changes to the code to align with best practices, modern standards, and technology, and keep Alberta in line with other Canadian jurisdictions.

Updates to the OHS code include harmonizing language, reducing duplication, and adopting best practices in the eight updated parts. A three-year review plan is now in place to chart out which parts of the OHS Code will be reviewed next and to ensure the OHS code is kept current.
