Earlier in 2017, WorkSafe BC announced amendments to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Regulation which will take effect on January 1, 2018. The amendment includes all steel storage racking over 8 feet or those under 8 feet loaded/unloaded by mechanical means. It excludes shelving and display fixtures used for retail purposes.
WorkSafe BC’s board instructed staff to have guidelines for the amendments in place for August 1, 2017. WorkSafe BC is consulting stakeholders on the draft guideline: https://www.worksafebc.com/en/law-policy/public-hearings-consultations/closed-public-hearings-and-consultations/consultation-draft-ohs-guideline-storage-racks?origin=s&returnurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.work....
The draft guideline will be of assistance for members in preparing to comply with the amended OHS regulation. The consultation period for the draft guideline ends at 4:30 p.m. PDT on July 10, 2017.
RCC and some members attended consultation sessions on the guideline in mid-June. RCC has asked WorkSafe BC to ensure that the guideline helps employers easily determine whether their steel racking is obligated under the amended regulation.
RCC will continue to be in contact with WorkSafeBC in regard to the amendments and implementation thereof. RCC will monitor whether WorkSafe BC amends the final guideline appropriately.
The full background can be found in our May 10, 2017 member notice on storage racking. WorkSafeBC first announced a proposal to regulate all storage racking in spring 2016 and RCC was able to achieve a specific exemption of all shelving and display fixtures used for retail purposes.
