Addressing enforcement challenges in Alberta retail settings
September 28, 2021On Monday, September 27, 2021, RCC met with the Health Ministry and Alberta Health Services, with the objective of addressing inconsistencies in the way enforcement officers are guiding stores on the management of customers without masks. As anticipated, RCC received confirmation that stores are expected to have in place reminder signage, and verbally remind customers to wear masks under the current health order requirement. However, in recognition that it may create an unsafe environment for staff, retailers are not expected to refuse service of a non-compliant customer.
Recently some enforcement agents have incorrectly advised stores that their duty includes the removal of non-mask wearing customers, and we have confirmed this is not the expectation.
