The Alberta government has completed its mandatory 10-year review of the Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA), which has governed how organizations collect, use, and disclose personal information since it took effect on January 1, 2004.
Key recommendations include giving the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta (OIPC)—which oversees compliance with PIPA—the authority to impose administrative monetary penalties. The report also urges the government to keep PIPA aligned with federal private sector privacy laws and ensure consistency with provincial privacy legislation across Canada.
