David Eby becomes leader of the B.C. NDP and Premier-designate

October 20, 2022

David Eby will be acclaimed as the Leader of the B.C. New Democratic Party and thus will be sworn in as B.C.’s next Premier in a few weeks. RCC has met David during his service as an MLA and Attorney-General. Invariably our experience is that David is a great listener who works to build effective solutions to public policy issues. He has also demonstrated that he is an effective internal advocate with his B.C. NDP caucus colleagues.

David Eby has served the MLA for Vancouver-Point Grey since 2013. David served as B.C.’s Attorney General and minister responsible for ICBC, BCLC, gaming and liquor policy from 2017 to 2020. Since 2020, he has continued as Attorney General and was also tasked as the minister responsible for housing.

David is a lawyer, noted for his work on constitutional and administrative law issues related to the protection and promotion of human rights and democratic freedoms. In his previous career, David was an adjunct professor of law at the University of British Columbia, president of the HIV/AIDS Legal Network, and served on the Vancouver Foundation’s Health and Social Development Committee. From 2009 to 2013, David ran the B.C. Civil Liberties Association as executive director.

David is recognized as one of British Columbia’s most effective advocates. His work at Pivot Legal Society to protect the human rights and dignity of homeless and underhoused residents of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside was recognized in 2011 by the UN Association in Canada and the B.C. Human Rights Coalition with their annual Renate Shearer award. He is the author of several books and articles on legal rights.

B.C.’s New Democrats won a significant majority in an election held in Fall 2020. Accordingly, RCC does not expect another election in the short-term. RCC appreciates the service that Premier John Horgan and his government have provided to British Columbians. B.C. was the only province not to order any retail business closures during the COVID-19 pandemic.
