Bill 72: New Grocery Labeling and Credit Rules

September 17, 2024

Attention grocery retailers in Quebec: On September 12, the Minister of Justice launched Bill 72 to change the rules regarding price labelling. The bill introduces new requirements for grocery retailers. For example, each product must indicate on the label whether it is taxable or non-taxable, whether the price is subject to a loyalty program and if not, by comparable quantity from one product to another, even the size of prices will be regulated, and increasing penalties for pricing errors from $10 to $15. It also revises credit rules for merchants, addressing credit limits, fees, and customer payment defaults.

RCC is monitoring consultations, expected in October, and is gathering member feedback. Contact Apraham Niziblian at ANiziblian@cccd-rcc.org if you have questions.  More information (in French) is available on the Office de la protection du consommateur website.
