Ontario EEE – Services offered by producer responsibility organizations (PROs)

In September 2020, the Government of Ontario released the final recycling regulation for electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) which makes producers responsible for lighting and information technology, telecommunications and audio visual equipment (ITT/AV). Producers of ITT/AV are required to register with the Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA) by January 31, 2021. For more information on compliance, RCC has prepared webpage with an overview of the regulation.

Under this new Individual Producer Responsibility (IPR) framework, producers will be required to take on the full cost of recycling EEE and must meet annual management requirements. To assist with various obligations, including collection and reporting, producers are able to sign-up with producer responsibility organizations (PROs). Within Ontario, the system is competitive so there are multiple PROs that producers can consider signing up with.
