Federal update: Speech from the Throne
November 23, 2021The House of Commons resumed meeting this week for the first time following the election after nearly five months since MPs last met. As per tradition, the government set a broad list of priorities through a Speech from the Throne and an update from the Government House Leader. A more detailed list of priorities will be released through ministerial mandate letters, which RCC expects will be published soon and will follow up with members accordingly.
Generally, of note, the government emphasized its commitment to protect the environment and support a post-pandemic recovery. The Liberals have signaled they will continue spending on COVID-19 economic supports for businesses and Canadians who need it most and will introduce a 10-day sick leave for all workers in federally regulated workplaces. Additionally, they’ve set out to finalize agreements with the remaining provinces and territories (Ontario, New Brunswick, the Northwest Territories, and Nunavut) to deliver $10-a-day childcare for families.
Once the government publishes its mandate letter, RCC will provide members with a more in-depth analysis of the policies and priorities impacting Canada’s retail sector.
