Game-Changing Employment Law Updates
December 17, 2024On Wednesday, December 4 , 2025 the newly re-elected Saskatchewan Party introduced amendments to the The Saskatchewan Employment Act that among other changes, will finally modernize how a work day is defined in the province, after years of RCC-led advocacy on the issue. Key updates include:
- The definition of a day now moves to a fixed calendar day from the rolling 24 hour clock.
- Removing the mandatory two consecutive days off rule for workplaces with 10+ employees.
- Expanding leave for sick, maternity, violence, and bereavement.
- Limiting when employers can make sick note requests.
- Raising thresholds for group terminations.
- Banning withholding of tips.
- Strengthening protections against discrimination.
With the shortened post provincial election fall sitting ending Tuesday, December 10, this Bill is not expected to be passed by the majority Saskatchewan Party until later this coming spring.
