Global Plastics Treaty Yet to Be Finalized at INC-5

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)’s fifth Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) did not reach an agreement on a global treaty to address plastic pollution, with key issues such as funding, enforcement, and phased reduction strategies remaining unresolved. Delegates committed to further discussions on outstanding issues, which will occur at INC-5.2 (date TBC). The intent is still to address these challenges and work toward a unified, legally binding agreement. RCC strongly supports a global treaty to prevent fragmented national and international regulations, working towards a level playing field for all stakeholders and will continue to monitor negotiations.
