Long Knife and Machete Regulations to be Released

December 3, 2024

RCC anticipated that new requirements for retailers selling long knifes (over 30 cm blades) and machetes will be required to adhere to new requirements as of January 2025. While theoretically applicable to all new sales, including online, in practical terms, brick and mortar retailers will be expected to put impacted inventory behind lock and will require the customer to present valid ID to confirm the customer is 18+ before completing the sale. Transactions records, including details related to the purchaser, will also need to be held for a period of 24 months. RCC has advocated for lighter administrative requirements, as well as exemptions so as to not inadvertently include home improvement, gardening, or kitchen blades. We have also highlighted that knifes have no serial numbers and can easily be resold or purchased online and that the rules should be reviewed after a period of time to determine if they have had the desired impact on crime.
