Manitoba enacts Accessible Information and Communication Standard

May 3, 2022

The Manitoba government has enacted the Accessible Information and Communication Standard Regulation designed to remove barriers that exist digitally, in-print, or through interaction with technology or people. This is the third Manitoba Accessibility Standard to be introduced and is widely considered to be the most complex and costly to implement.

The standard applies to all organizations with one or more employees and covers a broad range of communication channels. Private sector organizations have three years to comply, however as of May 1, 2025, will be required to enhance accessibility to websites and web applications by adhering to globally recognized Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1) Level AA, and be able to provide other forms of information in accessible formats, upon request.

Manitoba organizations are currently expected to have practices in place to meet the Accessible Customer Service Standard (2018) and Accessible Employment Standard (2021/2022). In coming months RCC will host a free webinar to help businesses understand the requirements of this new regulation.
