Media Statement: Retail Council of Canada Urges Federal Government to Act Immediately on Canada Post Strike on This Critical Day for Retailers and Consumers
November 29, 2024Retail Council of Canada (RCC) is urging the federal government to take immediate action to end the ongoing Canada Post strike, now in its third week. Coinciding with Black Friday, a pivotal day for the retail industry, the strike is jeopardizing Canada’s economy and disrupting consumers during this crucial holiday season.
The congestion of alternative delivery services is further compounding the crisis. Many private carriers have reached their maximum capacity, and in some cases, they can no longer guarantee on-time deliveries. Small and medium-sized businesses are struggling to ship their products and receive payments, straining cash flow and threatening their survival. Large retail chains are facing significant losses as consumers turn to international competitors with more reliable delivery options. Promotional flyers and discounts that drive consumers to local retailers are failing to reach mailboxes, not to mention all the holiday cards, letters to Santa, and children’s gifts that risk not arriving in time, leaving families and children disappointed during what should be a joyful season.
Canada Post is a cornerstone of Canada’s economy, delivering parcels, business documents, and essential goods. However, this strike is undermining its critical role, eroding consumer trust in Canadian retailers, and endangering thousands of jobs.
“This situation is untenable, and every day of inaction increases the economic toll,” said RCC. “The time has come for the government to use its powers to end this strike immediately. Restoring postal services is essential to protect Canadian businesses, preserve jobs, and ensure the holidays remain bright.”
