New Front-of-Pack Nutrition Labelling Requirements
February 24, 2025On July 20, 2022, Health Canada published the Regulations Amending the Food and Drug Regulations (Nutrition Symbols, Other Labelling Provisions, Vitamin D and Hydrogenated Fats or Oils). These regulations amend the Food and Drug Regulations to add a new requirement for front-of-package (FOP) nutrition symbol labelling for most prepackaged products containing saturated fat, sugars and/or sodium at or above specified thresholds. The front-of-package nutrition symbol is intended to help Canadians to more easily identify foods high in these nutrients.
RCC actively participated in the development of the new labelling requirements and was responsible for the development of the magnifying glass symbol, which is designed to encourage consumers to take a closer look at the Nutrition Facts table for more nutrition information.
Where can I find more information about the new labelling requirements?
Health Canada has published a Front-of-package nutrition symbol labelling guide for industry. Most recently updated in May 2023, this Guide is designed to support Canadian companies’ compliance with the new rules.
Health Canada also offers a free, online Nutrition Labelling Course that includes a section on front-of-package nutrition symbols.
What consumer awareness materials are available?
In February 2025, Health Canada launched a new initiative to increase consumers’ awareness of the front-of-package nutrition symbol. Materials are available on Health Canada’s website.
