Prepare for B.C.’s New Plastic Waste Rules, beginning July 15

July 9, 2024

Attention all retailers and quick-service restaurants: The B.C. Single-Use and Plastic Waste Prevention Regulation kicks in on July 15, 2024. There will be restrictions on paper and reusable plastic shopping bags province-wide where retailers will be required to charge. Prepare for:

  • $0.25 charge for paper bags (40% recycled content)
  • $2 for reusable bags (machine-washable 100+ times)

Additionally, businesses will no longer be able sell or distribute any packaging or single-use (“disposable”, “biodegradable” or “compostable”) products that contain oxo-degradable plastic.
