Premier Hogan Promises to Repeal Sugar Sweetened Beverage Tax

May 27, 2025

During Premier John Hogan’s first day in Newfoundland and Labrador’s House of Assembly as leader, he committed to repeal the province’s Sugar Sweetened Beverage tax.  RCC is actively consulting with the government regarding the details surrounding the repeal.  Although nothing has been finalized, it appears as though the tax will be repealed this summer.  The government wants to take swift action on this issue as it must call a provincial election before October 14, 2025.  Since its introduction in September 2022, RCC has consistently opposed the Sugar Sweetened Beverage tax which adds 20 cents per litre to obligated sugar sweetened beverages.
