Retail Council of Canada Welcomes G7 Commitment to Ensure Fairness in Global E-Commerce and Fighting Low-Value International Shipments

May 22, 2025

Toronto, May 22, 2025 – Retail Council of Canada (RCC) welcomes the announcement from the G7 Finance Ministers’ meeting in Banff, where leaders agreed to work together to address the growing challenges associated certain global e-commerce platforms, their low-value international shipments, and their impacts on domestic retail sectors.

This collaborative approach among G7 nations is a vital step toward building a more balanced and transparent international retail environment. RCC has been engaged with the Government of Canada for some time on these important issues, highlighting the need to ensure that all retailers—regardless of origin—compete on a level playing field.

“For many years, Canadian retailers have raised concerns about practices that appear to circumvent the rules and standards Canada based retailers follow every day,” said Diane J. Brisebois, President and CEO of Retail Council of Canada. “Whether it’s taxation, product safety, language laws, or environmental standards, it’s critical that the same expectations apply across the board.”

RCC believes that a fair and equitable marketplace is essential not only for the success of Canadian businesses but to protect our 2.3 million workers and the trust of Canadian consumers. The Council supports the government’s efforts to work with international partners to develop consistent, enforceable frameworks that uphold these shared values.

“We’re encouraged by the G7’s commitment to take meaningful action,” said Brisebois. “RCC looks forward to continuing its collaboration with the federal government to support this important work. Our goal is simple: to ensure a retail environment in Canada where everyone plays by the same rules.”
