Protecting Retailers Amid U.S. Tariffs and Canadian Countermeasures
January 28, 2025Retail Council of Canada (RCC) is leading the charge to protect retailers in Canada from the impact of U.S. tariffs and potential Canadian retaliation. Here’s what RCC is doing:
- High-Level Advocacy: Direct talks with the Prime Minister’s Office, senior government officials at Finance, Global Affairs, Premiers’ Offices & Ministers of Economic Development and Finance, Canada’s Ambassador to the U.S. and the Bank of Canada Governor, to ensure retail voices are heard.
- United Front: RCC has joined forces with the Canada-U.S. Trade Council (CUSTC) and other groups to address shared concerns.
- Data-Driven Insights: A refreshed AT Kearney study will be commissioned that will highlight the tariff impact on retailers and consumers, which will assist in supporting advocacy and media efforts.
- Cross-Border Expertise: RCC is forming a new “Can-Am Committee” for RCC members to provide critical insights on U.S.-Canada trade challenges.
- Media Leadership: Through op-eds, interviews, and updates to members, RCC is amplifying the Canadian retail perspective on tariffs.
RCC is preparing for all outcomes, including broad retaliatory measures, while ensuring retailers across Canada are informed, supported, and ready for what’s next.
