Quebec Expands Deposit System to All Plastic Beverage Containers

March 4, 2025

As of March 12025, all plastic beverage containers between 100 ml and 2 L now require a deposit in Quebec. This expansion adds 1.4 billion containers to the system, creating a major transition for retailers—many of whom must temporarily manage collections due to network deployment delays.

large-scale media campaign helped ease the transition by educating the public and discouraging mass returns. As a result, the first weekend was less hectic than expected.

The next phase in 2027 will include glass and multilayer carton containers. RCC continues to advocate for minimal retailer impact.
