RCC Urges Reform to Slash Blue Box Costs
February 25, 2025In interviews with the Toronto Star and Global News’ Devon Peacock, RCC’s Michael Zabaneh stressed the urgent need for legislative reform of Ontario’s Blue Box system. Without change, the system will cost upwards of $740 million annually—more than double current expenses—without yielding better environmental results. The current model, with four competing Producer Responsibility Organizations, leads to significant inefficiencies and high costs. RCC has been advocating for a single, program-plan based PRO model, similar to successful systems in other parts of Canada and Europe, to streamline operations, reduce costs, and enhance recycling outcomes.
