Retail employment numbers decline as a result of public health restrictions – StatCan
February 9, 2021Statistics Canada released January 2021 employment numbers last Friday that showed retail jobs declined by -7.4%.
As of December, employment in retail trade was within 3.7% of its pre-COVID level. But with the January losses, employment in the industry fell back to 10.8% below February job levels (pre-COVID-19).
Losses were in part-time work and were concentrated in Quebec and Ontario. On a year-over-year basis, the number of employees in retail trade was down by 19.1% in small establishments, and by 12.1% in establishments with 20 to 99 employees.
