Statistics Canada: Retail jobs see biggest growth in nearly a year
February 14, 2023The number of people working in retail and wholesale in Canada grew by 59,000 (+2.0%) in the month of January 2023 – the first notable increase since February 2022 – according to the latest jobs info from Statistics Canada.
Employment in general increased by 150,000 (+0.8%) in January, and the unemployment rate held steady at 5.0%.
This increase follows a decline in retail sales and a general slowing of economic activity in the retail industry in November. On a year-over-year basis, employment in wholesale and retail trade was little changed.
