Supply Chain Alerts Due to Wildfires and Labour Disputes

July 30, 2024

Service on the Canadian National (CN) Rail main line in Jasper, interrupted by wildfires, has resumed, but wildfires continue to threaten both CN Rail and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited (CPKC) rail systems.  Also expect heightened demand and vessel delays at the Port of Vancouver.

The Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) is set to resume hearings between ILWU Local 514 (representing 730 dock forepersons at Canada’s West Coast port terminals) and the B.C. Maritime Employers Association from August 6 – 9, 2024. The union is taking another strike vote which is expected to conclude by August 9, 2024.  A 72 hour strike notice will be served before any disruption.

Additionally, we expect the imminent ruling from the CIRB on the CPKC and CN Rail labour disputes. This is due by August 9, 2024, and no labour disruption can occur until 72 hours after this date, provided the ruling does not include an extended “cooling off” period. RCC is applying maximum pressure on all parties to achieve a resolution and avoid any work stoppages.
