Trump Slaps 25% Tariffs on Canadian Steel and Aluminum
February 11, 2025Late on Monday, President Trump issued a proclamation which will place 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports into the United States. Canada is the largest provider of steel and aluminum to the U.S., and their market is the destination for half of Canada’s steel, and 90% of aluminum exports. It has been reported that the tariffs are slated to come into effect on March 12, 2025. As of writing, we still do not yet have details on Canada’s response.
Regardless, the instability in the Canada-US trade relationship has intensified. RCC is concerned with the direct impacts these tariffs will have on some members and the broader impacts this will have for the economy, supply chains, and on the retail industry. We will continue to keep members updated on this fast-moving file.
