U.S. Tariffs: “Liberation Day” and What’s Next

April 1, 2025

On April 2, 2025, the Trump administration will announce new tariffs on Canada, dubbed “Liberation Day” by the president. The U.S. aims to counter what it sees as unfair trade practices by imposing reciprocal tariffs on key partners, including Canada. Additional tariffs on Canadian autos and auto parts will follow on Thursday, prompting a third round of Canadian counter-tariffs targeting more retail goods.

RCC is actively working with the federal government to minimize the impact on Canadian retailers. Last week, we submitted comments to the Department of Finance, urging against tariffs on U.S. goods lacking domestic or international alternatives. We also pushed for a more responsive tariff remission process and support for businesses and consumers. RCC will keep members informed as details emerge.
