Background on the consultation process for the Ontario EEE Regulation

NOTE – Ontario Regulation 522/20: Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE) has been released as of September 21, 2020.

Prior to the new regulation, electronics were handled under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment program (WEEE) managed by Ontario Electronic Stewardship (OES). The program began on April 1, 2009 and was later expanded in 2010 to collect a variety of electronics including televisions, phones, computers, printers and more. OES runs the program by charging fees to stewards.

In February 2018, OES received direction from the Minister of the Environment and Climate Change to wind-up the program on June 30, 2020. MECP later issued direction on July 2, 2019 to delay wind-up until December 31st, 2020.
