Overview of Alberta’s Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation

On October 3, 2022, the Government of Alberta released its Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation requiring producers to take on operational and financial responsibility for the management (collection, recycling, etc.) of two categories of designated material: 1) single-use products, packaging and paper products; and 2) hazardous and special products (HSP). The Regulation will come into effect on November 30, 2022 and producers will have just over two years to plan and implement systems so they are up and running by April 1, 2025.

Under the new regulation, producers will have individual regulatory responsibilities but they will be able to designate a producer responsibility organization (PRO) to act on their behalf (e.g., collect, process and market designated materials).
