RCC was quoted in a recent CTV News article on concerns that federal action on plastic reduction, including the proposed pollution prevention planning (P2) notice targeting grocers, could result in higher grocery prices for consumers at the till. Some estimates place it as high as a 30 per cent additional cost to consumers due to increased food loss, higher costs for alternative packaging types, and loss of efficiencies in shipping, particularly when considering Canada is largely an import market.
RCC is continuing to work closely with members and will be meeting with Environment Minister Guilbeault this week to reiterate concerns and the need for a realistic and phased approach to plastics and waste reduction that involves stakeholders from across the entire supply chain.
