RCC Leads Fight on B.C. Public Health Cost Recovery Legislation
April 2, 2024RCC has been a leader in working to inform elected officials and other business associations about the Public Health Accountability and Cost Recovery Act. The bill will have significant impacts for those manufacturing, promoting, distributing, and selling products and those offering services in B.C. It provides both governments with the ability to sue “big corporations” to recover health care costs in a manner similar to what has been done in the past with tobacco and opioids.
RCC is concerned not only about the legislation itself, but also that other provinces might follow British Columbia’s example in creating similar laws. RCC and the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade wrote the draft business association letter and recruited other business associations to sign. The letter asks the B.C. government to put the brakes on this legislation and undertake a thorough stakeholder consultation process before proceeding.
