UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) being held in Montreal

December 20, 2022

Over the last two weeks, delegates from 190+ countries have been in Montreal for COP15: the UN Biodiversity Conference, with the goal of adopting a post-2020 global biodiversity framework to help drive conservation efforts for ecosystems and wild species. Beyond environmental concerns, these efforts are crucial as the UNDP estimates that “…degrading ecosystems could trigger a downward spiral of US$2.7 trillion in global Gross Domestic Product by 2030.”

Despite some contentious discussions over funding, nations were able to reach an agreement, titled the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, on Monday, December 19. As part of this, nations agreed on four goals and 23 targets, including the 30 by 30 target whereby 30% of land and water will be protected by 2030. Efforts will also commence to raise US$200 billion in both public and private funding per year by 2030. RCC will continue to monitor targets and progress as implementation rolls out, particularly in Canada.
