Health Canada publishes updated guidance on front-of-package nutrition labelling

May 10, 2023

Health Canada has published their updated Front-of-package nutrition symbol labelling guide for industry (Version 2) (Guidance).

In July 2022, Health Canada published Front-of-Package Nutrition Labelling regulations that require a new Nutrition Symbol to be displayed on the front of most prepacked foods that have higher amounts of saturated fats, sodium and/or sugar. Health Canada’s Guidance document provides an interpretation of the new regulations to support the industry’s implementation.

Following RCC’s advocacy, the updated Guidance includes new flexibilities for retail scale labels and new information for specific labelling cases, such as ornamental and decorative containers, variety packs, and foods that are intended to be combined.

It is anticipated that Health Canada will be holding a webinar on the updated Guidance this summer. Further details will be shared through RCC’s Food Safety & Nutrition Committee when they are available.
