Update: Flexibility on pre-packed meat labelling approved

June 16, 2020

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has agreed to RCC’s request for flexibility with regards to the sale of pre-packaged meat produced in and labelled for other countries such as the United States.

Product information can be provided in any legible format or in any place on the label. Any product information that cannot be provided in both English and French due to factors relating to COVID-19 can be made available by other means, such as a sticker, a leaflet, a highly visible sign at the point of purchase, or on the retail business website with instructions on how to access it. Provincial laws relating to bilingual labelling continue to apply. The notice is effective for 90 days (September 13, 2020) and may be renewed subject to a revaluation of conditions at that time. The notice and full list of conditions are posted here. RCC grocery members had requested this labelling flexibility to source food during the COVID-19 crisis. Members also requested the ability to sell provincially-certified meat interprovincially and the ability to sell products destined for foodservice establishments, all of which have been agreed to by CFIA.
