RCC statement on potential CN Rail strike

March 7, 2023

RCC is calling upon the Federal Government to take all necessary steps to avert the potential CN Rail strike action by Unifor.

Industrial action that prevents the shipment of consumer goods and agri-food (whether inputs or finished products) could have a severe negative impact on every Canadian. Our members are also concerned about the broader impact on the Canadian economy, and the cessation of CN shipments more generally.

Casual observers might not expect retail to be severely affected by the cessation of rail freight services, but the numbers tell a different story. RCC estimates that retail-related shipments carried by CN are in excess of two million containers annually or roughly three-quarters of CN intermodal traffic.

We understand that labour negotiations are complicated balancing acts and hope that both parties are able to reach an agreement. Should this not happen, we call upon the Federal Government to employ all of the tools at its disposal to prevent an outcome that would negatively impact consumers and workers alike.
