New Protections for B.C. App-Based Workers

June 18, 2024

Attention retailers using app-based third-party delivery services: Starting September 3, 2024, third-party app-based ride-hailing and delivery workers in B.C. will earn a minimum of $20.88 per hour (120% of the regular minimum wage) and receive mileage compensation. Additionally, workers using personal vehicles will be compensated at $0.45/km for ride-hailing assignments and $0.35/km for delivery assignments. New regulations and a regulatory amendment also cover tips, suspensions, terminations, and workers’ compensation. This landmark move ensures fair pay and transparency for gig workers across the province. Note that these regulations do not apply to companies using their own app exclusively for delivering their own products.
