Nanaimo single-use bag bylaw to take effect July 1, 2021

March 9, 2021

Nanaimo passed a shopping bag bylaw on February 22, 2021 which takes effect July 1, 2021. RCC has written to indicate our opposition to such a short-notice implementation. The Mayor of Nanaimo replied indicating no desire to change the effective date. RCC has a web page with single-use bylaws Canada-wide (those passed by councils), as well as a BC-specific update about upcoming bans (not yet passed by councils).

RCC’s understanding is that the province will issue a ministerial order to permit future bans by other local governments: RCC has a meeting scheduled with the province to discuss the implications of short-notice implementation time frames.
